Built on the Rock: What Holds When the Storm Comes

By · 24 Oct 2026

A whitewashed stone cottage with lit windows stands firm on a rock above a stormy sea while a shack on the sand below falls apart.

At a glance

  • Jesus ends the Sermon on the Mount with a picture every builder knows: the house stands or falls on what is under it.
  • Storms come to both houses. The difference is the foundation, and you cannot see it from the street.
  • Today: put one decision on the rock of what Christ actually said, not on what feels solid.

The passage

Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock. And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.

Matthew 7:24-27 (KJV)

The picture

Every builder knows the foundation is the part of the house nobody admires and everybody depends on. Once the dirt is filled back in, a foundation dug deep enough looks exactly like one dug too shallow. The difference shows up in the third winter, when the ground heaves and one wall cracks and the other does not.

Jesus does not promise the wise builder a mild climate. The same rain, the same floods and the same winds beat on both houses. What He promises is that a house founded on the rock will still be standing when the weather clears. The test is not whether trouble comes. It is what you built on before it came.

Notice the condition, too. The wise man is the one who “heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them,” not the one who only hears. Hearing is the survey. Doing is the pour. A set of drawings, however good, holds up nothing until the concrete is in the ground.

Who does the building

Except the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it: except the LORD keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain.

Psalm 127:1 (KJV)

The psalm keeps the picture honest. We are called to dig and to pour, but the rock is not ours, and neither is the strength to build on it. Our diligence matters, and it only lasts when the Lord is the one building through it.

Try this today

Pick one decision in front of you this week, at work or at home. Before you settle it, ask what Christ has actually said that bears on it, and write that down next to the decision. Then do it, so the hearing becomes building.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, You are the rock. Forgive me for the times I have built on my own cleverness and called it solid. Give me ears to hear Your sayings and the will to do them, so that when the storms come, my house stands because it rests on You. Build what I cannot build, and keep what I cannot keep. Amen.
